Quotes[]

  • "What does Squidward wanna do in this episode? Just have a relaxing Sunday. And SpongeBob and Patrick through in it beyond belief in ways that just aren't even funny." (Good Neighbors)
  • "With it not being funny, it is not a good episode, and I rewatched it and what really pushed me over the edge from Meh right into ScumBob territory is SpongeBob's infernal laughter. They make it even more annoying in this episode by adding a squeaky toy effect to it. And it PLAYS CONSTANTLY IN THE EPISODE. AND THEN, HE CRIES A LOT IN THE EPISODE." (Funny Pants)
  • "It's one thing if you're a parent and you can't afford to give a kid a birthday party, but the fact that Mr. Krabs has all of that money, and he refuses to get her even a cake is just really sad and comes off as just, almost child abuse here." (Whale of a Birthday)
  • "You know exactly what's gonna happen soon as he gets the new spatula, and it's not really any fun to watch." (All That Glitters)
  • "It's an episodic show and if you know this, then there's no tension in the episode because obviously, Plankton's gonna stay evil and obviously, it's part of some law-running scheme." (New Leaf)
  • "I mean yeah, the wig looks silly but everyone in this episode just outright attacks SpongeBob." (Wigstruck)
  • "Ugh, there really isn't much that to redeem in this episode." (The Thing)
  • "A lot of the stuff just falls flat and I don't even know if there is that many jokes to begin with and that reference really is just pointless." (Hocus Pocus)
  • "Yeah, we have two episodes in a row where Patrick is a jerk. But this time, there is not really much to redeem and he is just a jerk through and through." (Rule of Dumb)
  • "It's episodes like these that just really feel like the universe is out to get Squidward and SpongeBob is a real jerk here, he is controlling the Squidward puppet, right?" (Squid Wood)
  • "I mean the second half is meh, but the first half is really stupid and it's insulting that they dragged Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy into this mess." (Night Light)
  • "This is the first episode where he is primarily by himself, and he proves that this is a terrible, terrible idea because apparently the only jokes you can tell with Patrick is that "err-du-durr", he's stupid." (Rise and Shine)
  • "It has SpongeBob crying excessively, it has things that don't make sense like apparently SpongeBob missed his surprise birthday party that happened 5 seconds off screen, and obvious jokes like Patrick eating the cake and, has the fact the episode just barely even bothers with the plot or any sort of gags!" (Waiting)
  • "That's all the entirety of the episode is. People eating disgusting fungus, people scratching disgusting fungus, SpongeBob being mutilated by this disgusting fungus, that's all it is." (Fungus Among Us)
  • "It's kind of obvious this episode is trying to catch on in success with the Krusty Krab Training Video, but there are a number of things that are really wrong with this episode." (Boat Smarts)
  • "There's supposed to be this competition between Squidward and SpongeBob in order to say all the customer's names, but really only Squidward is trying. SpongeBob is kind of naming all these people. He's not really fiercely competing with Squidward, he just kinda seems to be going around saying hi to everyone like SpongeBob would usually do." (Good 'Ol Whatshisname)
  • "Too much of my life, this special did rob! I think it's clear that it is a SCUMBOOOOOOOOOOB!" (Atlantis SquarePantis)
  • "Because this was the episode that was so bad, so frustrating, so un-SpongeBob like that made me wake up and realize the show was no longer the same. It is very much a SCUMBOB episode, and that song will haunt in my nightmares. I pray to Neptune and Poseidon that I never have to see it again." (SpongeHenge)
  • "It was not fun to watch then, and it's not fun to watch now. I hate splinters. More than the average person. When I was a child, I walked barefoot on a deck and ended up with over thirty splinters in my feet. There were so many splinters that I had to go to the hospital and be put in a strait-jacket while the doctors pulled them out. There were so many, in fact, that they couldn't get all of them out. The splinters stayed in my feet, and I had to soak them in hot water for the next few weeks just to get them out. I. Hate. Splinters. A good episode would take something as horrifying as splinters and make them funny, using comedy to take away my fear of them, and take away the power that they have over me. This is not a good episode." (The Splinter)
  • "I think this episode would've been great as a 4 minute episode back in season 5. I think the slide whistle jokes are unusual and interesting, and to have a whole "short" based around them would've been clever. But this goes on for way too long. It's a- (cuts to a real life Pieguy blowing a slide whistle and sliding the instrument out) SCUMBOB." (Slide Whistle Stooges)
  • "And there's another extended scene where SpongeBob, Squidward, and Mrs. Puff are in the car that goes out of control, and then what happened some kind of science laboratory where they get shrunk and almost eaten, and then wiped down the drain. It just goes on and on, and has nothing to do with anything! And it's not mentioned again! It's definitely a Big Lipped Alligator Moment! But more than that, this episode is a SCUMBOB episode." (Boating Buddies)
  • "Of course, Mr. Krabs is gonna make Spongebob print lies. Of course, the lies are actually hurting people. Of course, Spongebob's last story is going to be about Mr. Krabs. DUH." (The Krabby Kronicle)
  • "SCUMBOB! SCUMBOB!! SCUMBOB!!!! I REALLY Hate This Episode Guys! SO Much About This Bothered Me! Where do I even start with this one?" (Choir Boys)
  • "So apparently, Spongebob doesn't know what a Viking is. The guy who celebrates Leif Erikson Day doesn't know what a Viking is. The guy who wears a Viking hat in his own opening theme doesn't know what a Viking is. It's not even like him not knowing what a Viking is is really that crucial to the story. I just- I don't understand why... it's even... I just... what?" (Dear Vikings)
  • "This thing was actually nominated for an Emmy. And it didn't win, for a very good reason. This episode is a SCUMBOB!" (Dear Vikings)
  • "...and I really have no idea how they keep making the same mistake over and over again. (cuts to real life Pieguy, looking and sounding really disheveled) And you know what? They do it again! And it's the very, next, episode! (blows slide whistle)." (Cephalopod Lodge, transition to Squid's Visit)
  • "Uggghhh. 123-124, Truth or Square. A TV movie so bad, it takes up two production numbers. Since I've already talked about this thing a lot, and it's pretty much a forgone conclusion that it's a SCUMBOB epissode, how about we do something a little bit different?" (Truth or Square)
  • "It is one of the worst pieces of television I have ever seen produced. It's sad that it could turn out this bad when the show makes so much money. And when I say so much money, I mean eight billion dollars, annually. That's how much this show brings in, and yet still decide to shoot around Nickelodeon Studios, they still decide to get the cheapest, laziest celebrity cameos, most of them not even being in the same room as our main actor, effects that are bad, but not in any sort of funny way, editing that is just sloppy at best, poor camera work, it drives me up a tree when I see student projects from my college look better than this! In my opinion at least, this is the ultimate middle finger to the audience. This is Nickelodeon saying "Yeah, yeah we hardly put money, or time, or effort into this thing, but sure, we're gonna make you sit through it, because we know you wanna watch Spongebob, and we thing you'll watch literally anything! So we're gonna shove some terrible, terrible, terrible things right in the middle of Spongebob just to stretch out the episode to get more commercial breaks and more money from ya!" I know I say this a lot, but I really don't ever want to see these segments ever again! Obviously, they're SCUMBOB segments." (Truth or Square, Patchy segments)
  • "I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If they'd actually done a clipshow with actual clips from previous episodes, and I'm not talking about the clips of Patchy at the beginning and end of this thing! I mean, actual funny Spongebob clips, and memorable Spongebob clips, if they had used those, then this would actually feel special. This would actually feel big, and important, and just a big celebration of what Spongebob is and was! But instead, all it is is a reminder of how much the show has changed. Even without Patchy, it's a SCUMBOB episode, and a really pathetic one, for an anniversary special!" (Truth or Square, Spongebob side)
  • "And there's an overly long, annoying sequence where SpongeBob puts his face up to the cage with Triton is capped while Triton's been shrunk down, so that SpongeBob's face is huge and his breath is stinky, and his face is just drawn in such a grotesque, unappealing way! Is that supposed to be a joke? What's it so funny about having SpongeBob's ugly face that close to the camera for that long? It's not like the quickly flash to it or anything. If it wasn't funny at the first second, holding on it isn't gonna make it any funnier! It's a SCUMBOB episode, and there's not even any comedy here on top of all of the other problems! The last shot is the Bikini Bottom's mind brand of chase after SpongeBob after their town has been destroyed. What a wonderfully fitting way for the season to end!" (The Clash of Triton)
  • "Yeah, we're starting this one off with a SCUMBOB episode, which is the first time this has ever happened." (Tentacle-Vision)
  • "...but more fitting is Sandy's quote (which is written "Time to go catch me some scum!")! Because this is indeed a SCUMBOB episode." (Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy)
  • "The episode isn't bold and brash, it just belongs in the trash." (Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful)
  • "So, was this episode a wonderful surprise out of nowhere? No, actually, I really don't like this episode. I think it is SCUMBOB episode. I really think this whole thing is a big mess. It's halfway stuck between trying to be epic and trying to be silly, and it ends up being neither of these things." (Back to the Past)
  • "For the first half of this, I wanted to plug my ears, and the second half of this, I nearly fell asleep." (A Day Without Tears)
  • "Between all these little ambiguities, you're left with an episode that's just unclear in general. Who am I supposed to be rooting for here? I know most people wouldn't root for Mr. Krabs, but was it the intent that we were supposed to root for Mr. Krabs? Was it the intent we were supposed to root for Plankton? Are-Are we supposed to root for Spongebob? I'm not entirely sure." (One Coarse Meal)
  • "They definitely could've been more clever way to include her in the story. I see no reason to go in for the detail because call it Someone's in the Kitchen with Gramma pretty much gives it everything you need to know about this episode. SCUMBOB!" (Gramma's Secret Recipe)
  • "Also, this episode featured some really noticeable CGI, and there's quite a few animation mistakes for some reasons! You think that the first episode for their big special of the season were actually having more love and care put into it, SO IT'S NOT TO HAVE SUCH GLARING MISTAKES! But no, now then, they didn't care!" (The Monster Who Came to Bikini Bottom)
  • "I wonder if the title of the episode refers to the quality of this show." (That Sinking Feeling)
  • "This is... a SCUMBOB! (mocking Spongebob) Am I sure? Am I really sure? Am I really- YES, I'M REALLY SURE!" (Hide and Then What Happens?)
  • "Just the episode is so repetitive and not funny, and just drives on that Good Ol' Patrick's stupidity." (Big Sister Sam)
  • "...which I like, except for the fact that this episode is awful! Thanks in part to Patrick and Spongebob." (Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom)
  • "But like I said, that part is not too bad, what really kills this episode is Patrick! Why do they think that Patrick shoving random objects into his mouth is funny? It doesn't make any sense. Patrick's not confusing these items for food items, he's just literally shoving whatever is important to the plot down his fat gullet! For no reason! Even dumb people have motivation for their action! Even if it is a stupid motivation, it's still a motivation. Patrick has none whatsoever." (Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom)
  • "And with SpongeBob tagging along, it makes sense because he got in on the tickets, what's awful is that Patrick just pops back up in the middle of the episode out of complete nowhere! How did he get into the concert? How did he get into backstage? Hurr-durr, for the lols, I guess. But it's not funny, and it just makes the story frustrating! And seeing him going up onstage and ordering food? God, it's so stupid! And then for some unexplained reason, the crowd lets Patrick crowd surf! WHY!? Why are they happy that Patrick just interrupted the concert with his idiotic reading of what he wants to eat!? And that doesn't make sense either, because how does a stage in any way resemble a fast food restaurant? Just because Patrick is stupid does not give the writers license to have him do literally anything! That's bad writing, and this is a SCUMBOB!" (Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom)
  • "...and for an episode called "Bubble Buddy Returns," Bubble Buddy sure has returned that much in this episode! He gets like 3 lines!" (Bubble Buddy Returns)
  • "169a, "Are You Happy Now?" -(mumbling) Because I'm sure I'm not.- Squidward becomes depressed after realizing he has no happiest memory." (Are You Happy Now?)
  • "There are a lot of Season 8's SCUMBOBs that aren't that bad, but this one? This one is that bad!" (Are You Happy Now?)
  • "It's obviously a SCUMBOB episode. It's the same exact story as Hooky, and The Main Drain, and Sailor Mouth, and Karate Choppers to an extent, which is fine if you're gonna do something with it, but they don't. They use this basic story type of Mr. Krabs telling Spongebob and Patrick not to do something that they do anyway to just angle a bunch of stupid faces in our face!" (Face Freeze!)
  • "But nope! They need to make sure you know that she wants him to die an aggressively death!" (Demolition Doofus)
  • "Yeah, it's a SCUMBOB episode! It's certainly not unwatchablely bad, but it's definitely bad!" (Squid Baby)
  • "I don't really have a problem with Squidward being punished for doing a bad thing and I also don't have a problem with the show treating diary reading as if it's some serious crime but what I do have a problem with is that that is what the rest of the episode is. Squidward doesn't change or learn, no one tries to read Squidward's diary, there's no interesting turn here, it's just people being down on Squidward." (Little Yellow Book)
  • "Hooo boy! THIS is a BAD episode! Buckle up guys, because this is gonna be a long review." (Spongebob You're Fired)
  • "...like imagine if in the SpongeBob movie, instead of Mr. Krabs not allowing SpongeBob to run the Krusty Krab to because he was too immature, but instead, because [mocking Mr. Krabs] it would've saved me a heck penny! Ar-ar-ar-ar-argh! That would've been stupid!" (SpongeBob You're Fired)
  • "...but uh-oh! All Spongebob can make is Krabby Patties! Because that's never been done before, and the worst part about this is that it's not a montage, it's not a bunch of quick cuts. It's a long drawn-out thing of Spongebob going to restaurant after restaurant after restaurant where the same thing happens every time. It's as monotonous as Atlantis SquarePantis. Having a character do something four times with the same result every time is not an interesting story!" (Spongebob You're Fired)
  • "So after all that, Spongebob goes home, and goes to feed Gary, but he doesn't have any Snail Po, so he makes his own, which turns out to be like a Krabby Patty because that's all he can make. Oh, wait, no, that would make sense. Instead he makes really good tasting snail food. Which leads to... nothing at all! This whole scene of Spongebob making snail food has nothing to do with anything that happens in the episode! You think maybe it's gonna set up that "oh wow, Spongebob can actually make snail food, so maybe he'll go work at a snail food place?" But no, no, that's not what happens. So the show just contradicts itself and says he can make something other than Krabby Patties for exactly no reason! And then after this, Spongebob gets kidnapped! By the hot dog guy. The one who thought that Spongebob making his hot dogs into patties was an abombination? Yeah, apparently, he served them to his customers, and they loved it. This directly contradicts what happens earlier in the episode, where he throws the patties on the ground and kicks Spongebob out! But hey, who needs consistency? Who needs logical sense? It's just a wacky Spongebob cartoon! No, it's not for the sake of a joke, Spongebob doesn't point this out, it's just an inconsistency because they didn't care!" (Spongebob You're Fired)
  • "...surprise of all surprises, the Krusty Krab was horribly run without Spongebob! Because that has never happened on the show and wasn't the most obvious way to bring him back to the Krusty Krab! Look, I get it. It's obvious to everyone that he's gonna end up back at the Krusty Krab at the end of the episode, but that's no reason to just completely phone in the excuse just to get him back! Come on, do something different, give us something better than this! It's a SCUMBOB episode, and you probably saw that coming, right? But, didn't I make the ride to get there enjoyable and interesting, even though where I was going to end up was very obvious? Hmm, if only this episode did that! But no, this is just abysmal! The episode has no focus with random scenes that have nothing to do with anything, a completely awful reason for the story to even happen in the first place, is stupidly melodramatic and slow, and almost everything that happens in it feels so been there, done that! Even the name of the episode is very similar to "Mrs. Puff, You're Fired"! Was there any good joke in here? I have no idea because I was too distracted by how awful this story is! And the ending to the episode was the most bland and predictable thing to ever happen in Spongebob! And by the way, had exactly nothing to do with the events of the episode! You could show the beginning of the episode, do a time card that says "One day later..." and then show the ending of the episode, and you would lose exactly zero information! Great story, right? Where everything the protagonist does has exactly nothing to do with the main conflict!" (Spongebob You're Fired)
  • "Anyway, this episode is... now, what's the word? Um... Oh yeah. AWFUL! I actually had trouble coming up with a description for this episode because the conflict doesn't actually kick in until very, very late." (Company Picnic)
  • "And yeah, if it wasn't obvious, that's Bob Barker as Bob Barnacle." (Sanctuary!)
  • "The episode is also obvious! Because they show us at the beginning that it's Plankton in disguise. It would've been one thing if they left it ambiguous, like they strongly hinted it was Plankton, and Krabs would suspect it being Plankton, but surprise plot twist, it actually isn't Plankton. But no, they just point-blankly show us that it is Plankton from the very start, and no duh, his plan is going to fail!" (Married to Money)
  • "First off, a large chunk of it is spent with characters being dumb, and they go with the laziest way to portray a dumb person! They have them go "DUH... DUH... DUH..." and just walk into walls and stuff!" (Salsa Imbecilicus)
  • "The humor is infantile, and the focus is scattershot. There're some good ideas in here, but the execution is just imbecilicus!" (Salsa Imbecilicus)
  • "Hey, I've been working on these videos for a long time, not every single fact can be fun!" (Mutiny on the Krusty)
  • "...but the diaper gag actually genuinely made me shudder. Patrick puts a diaper inside of his head and eye sockets and says it feels squishy. Eughugh..." (Whirly Brains)
  • "It's funny that snooze is in the title because it's definitely what I want to do while this episode is playing." (Snooze You Lose)
  • "I'll tell you where SpongeBob's Place is. SpongeBob's Place is at the bottom of the ocean with the rest of the SCUMBOB episodes!" (SpongeBob's Place)
  • "I just cannot stand that they did this idea again. It's already frustrating enough that they tried to fool the audience the first time, but this time it just feels like a really poor man's version of that." (Plankton Retires)
  • "...but an even bigger issue than that is the whole lost children concept of this episode, where SpongeBob runs into a bunch of elderly people that were apparently kids that got lost in the Krusty Krab. The episode could've had a monster be the antagonist or had SpongeBob being lost be in the main conflict all on its own, but for whatever reason, they decided to have these elderly people who literally lost their childhood and adulthood to the Krusty Krab's weird basement lost and found. These characters aren't interesting or funny on their own, so nothing distracts me from how depressing this concept is! Yeah, it's SpongeBob, and yeah, it wasn't supposed to be taken as dark, but GOSH, DARN IT! IT IS DARK!" (Lost and Found)

Trivia[]

  • The scum for some seasons starting with season 5 all have a certain design that correlates to the season they are from:
    • Season 5's scumbob transition is a mossy fungus looking scum covering the screen. As stated by PieGuy in his Spongey Bits on the 83 trilogy, the scum is based on the fungus from Fungus Among Us.
      • This transition returned after a few years in the Top 10 Spongebob Shorts video, altered slightly. It is now in HD, has a faster animation, and the scum does't fade in and out of the screen.
    • Season 6's scumbob transition is what seems to be a stream of scum getting flinged at the screen. The scum is likely based on the baby worm's vomit from Pet or Pests, as well as the overall gross aesthetic of season 6.
    • Season 7's scumbob transition is scum falling from the top of the screen to the bottom before being drained out with brown scum showing up. The scum is in three shades of green. This doesn't seem to have a clear reference, but it could be a reference to the toxic waste jug's sludge from The Monster who Came to Bikini Bottom. The animation of the scum draining could be a reference to The Main Drain.
    • Season 8's scumbob transition is a simple scum ribbon swirling on the slide with scum spreading everywhere. This is likely a reference to the effects of jerktonium from It's a Sponge Bob Christmas!
    • Season 9's scumbob transition is a scum ball rising up and popping, leaving scum everywhere. This is reference to the goo bubbles from It Came from Goo Lagoon.
    • Season 10's scumbob transition is a green spherical sponge moving on the top of the screen from right to left cropdusting the slide with scum. This is a reference to Neptune's Moon from Feral Friends. Additionally, the scum is modeled to look like chalk drawings, in reference to the Mrs. Puff theme of that video.
  • PieGuy has certain Piecons when declaring a scumbob episode.
